Preparing for ‘earning and learning’

Faletao was unemployed and needed a focus. We had just what he needed.

The short, three-week Preparation for Work course focuses on a few key industries and skills. The course gave Faletao the opportunity to get his full driver’s licence and his forklift licence - both these skills significantly increased his chance of getting a job. And he did.

Soon after completing his training Faletao started work at labour hire company, Kiwi Contract Services.

“Because I had those skills, I got jobs through them straight away. These things, plus my prayers, are what got me my job.”

Not to mention – he says – a little bit of help from the great Preparation for Work team.

“The friendliness and helpfulness of the Chamber team was really encouraging - their smile, their attitude. And they’re really positive people. I wish they were all over the place.”

Despite it being challenging for Faletoa in a new environment and around new people, he was able to build really positive relationships during his time in the programme - not only with the Chamber team, but also with his fellow candidates.

Faletao’s hardworking and committed, and says that no matter the challenges, he is learning to bring the good and leave the bad and stay focused on two key ideas: learning and earning.

“Everywhere you go, put your heart into it. I wish everyone good luck, and I’m having fun!
