Surrounding yourself with the right people
Sri arrived in New Zealand in 2016 from a small town in India. He came in search of a better education and life and was excited about the opportunity. What he wasn’t prepared for was the cultural shock of being in a new country and found everything very difficult, the education system, ideas, thinking were nothing like he was used to.
He arrived with a bachelor’s degree in engineering and decided to go to Unitec to study project management. When he graduated he was ready to start work and started applying for jobs with the CV he had prepared back in India. He started getting rejection after rejection and eventually, the months and years went by with no jobs. It was a really hard time. He estimates he applied for over 300 jobs over a 4 year period and was never successful.
A colleague from his class introduced him to the Auckland Business Chamber and New Kiwi program. Sri met Belinda who helped him rewrite his CV using important keywords and formats that New Zealand employers were looking for. He also attended a course on interview skills. Within 3 months Sri had landed a dream job which he loves. His advice is “surrounding yourself with the right people will help you get your dream”.
